Bed Light Cameras

Well I've been an internet slacker. It's been years since I posted on this blog or even had it setup and published under my domain.

Anyway I thought I would add some satire from a post of mine that was deleted on a local forum. There has been some heated discussion about an upcoming election on Red light cameras in College Station Texas. I thought to add some fun to the mix but I guess I went too far. I don't think I got the ban stick but the topic was deleted.

Here is a direct link to the heavily moderated forum. I fixed a few typos in the below text.

October 19 2019 (College Station TX)
Voters to decide the fate of bed light cameras.

In 2003 the Supreme Court issued a ruling on Lawrence vs Texas that invalidated anti-sodomy laws. In late 2014 that ruling was overturned by Johnson vs Flowers leading to Texas re-instituting even stiffer anti-sodomy legislation. Any sex act not intended for procreation now falls under these laws and even goes so far as to include married couples. Enforcement was almost impossible as police had to catch the person in the act then burden of proof has been a slippery problem in the courtroom.

The expansion of the Patriot Act in 2015 allowed warrant-less audio and video access to any non-government facility. This combination created an explosion of bed light camera companies formerly located in Europe to expand into the US.

Early in 2017, the City of College Station quickly worked with UK based Bed Light Camera Inc, a pioneer in the field, to install cameras in every bedroom and hotel room within the city limits. Fines from the Bed Light cameras are considered to be a civil penalty unlike criminal penalties when arrested by a police officer. Fines range from $2000 to $5000 per act and are emailed from BLCs Texas office in Dallas.

BLC is paid a flat fee for the service. The rest of the funds are split between the the city and the state of Texas.

In a recent speech at the College Station Municipal Compound Mayor John Thomas was quoted "Bed light cameras are not about revenue, they are about the safety and integrity of our community. All videos are reviewed by the entire department to ensure a violation has been committed, sometimes we review them multiple times just to be sure before we send out a fine. If you don't want a ticket then don't break the law." While BLC opposition spokesman Willie McLuvin points out the Mayor spends more time in hotel rooms in Bryan, which does not have cameras, than he does at his own residence in College Station. McLuvin says "I've been married for 15 years, the rare times my wife is in the mood for something a little different I have to scramble to get a nice hotel room in Bryan and that's no easy task." Another protester who wished to remain anonymous said "My husband and I are trying to have children and well within the law but it's almost impossible for him to finish with the flash going off all the time right in our faces"

Opposition seems to be heavier through online forums but voters are expected to keep the cameras due to the large influx of voting seniors that flocked here over the recent years due to a low frozen property tax rate.

Early voting starts today with the polls open at 7am on Tuesday October 22nd.
