People driving in glass houses
People in their cars...
I like to watch people and how they act and interact with their environment. It's really interesting and funny what people will do in their daily lives and in public when they don't think anyone is watching.
A few months ago I was stuck in start stop freeway traffic, I had somewhere to be and was kind of pissed that knowing I was going to be at least an hour later due to (what I found out later was) a single stalled vehicle on the shoulder of the road. I look over to my left and see a very youthful 30ish lady dressed in typical corporate attire, but what caught my eye was that she was apparently listening to what for those few minutes was her favorite song in the entire world. I have no idea how good or horrible her voice was but she was giving it her all. I mean this is the kind of stuff you did when you were 15 years old imitating your favorite singing star. She was bouncing in her seat and bobbing her head from side to side. I could not help instantly changing the scowl of frustration I had on my face to a huge smile. This woman with her carefree singing lightened the rest of my drive in and she had no idea.
Today as I was driving around town going from location to location for my job, I started looking around me and really checking out what was going on in the cars around me. When I stopped to think about it, people must really think when they are in their cars it's just like being at home with the curtains drawn. One woman was totally reaming her husband/boyfriend, he was just nodding and frustrated as hell, he looked like he wanted a remote with a mute button. I figure husband at this point as he looks like he has been through this quite a few times and very well versed as to his part. Another fairly old man was digging for gold, I swear he had his finger so far up in his nose it was almost to the second knuckle. He apparently came up with a juicy one because he kept trying to flick it off his finger out the window trying to be nonchalant and luckily not aiming in my direction. Many of the drivers of course were so engrossed in their cell phone conversations they had no idea where they were and seemed to be on autopilot. I'm impressed that women are able to apply makeup while driving and not take out half of the cars on the road, especially when they are applying mascara. I'll have to try shaving sometime to see if I get a reaction or looks at any stoplights. After all that looking around I made eye contact with only a very small percentage of the people I was watching, I simply smiled and nodded and usually got the same in return.
So what's my point? None... Well other than that the next time you have that itch up in your nose while you are driving or you decide to be Mick Jagger in your car for 5 minutes, someone is probably watching and hopefully entertained.
